Picking the right size is one of the most trivial parts of choosing a bed frame. That’s right, after deciding on a style you like, the right material, and the right manufacturer, you must then ensure that your frame of choice can fit in the space you have.
Naturally, there are many combinations of bed frame size to choose from. From smaller frames perfect for single sleepers to extravagant frames fit for two sleepers that want a bit more room, there’s a lot to choose from.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, don’t panic. Here, we’ll recap all the different bed frame and mattress sizes we have available.
To keep things easy, we’ve categorized each kind of bed frame size into a few different tiers: small, medium-large, and extra-large.
If we forget about beds made for children (or even pets), this first category contains the very smallest bed frames available. It starts with the twin/single bed, which measures 39” x 75”, before moving onto the twin XL, which adds an additional 5” to the length of the bed.
After the single frames, we move to the doubles. The first double (full/double) measures 54” x 75” by 6’3”, while, as is the case with the twin bed frames, the full XL adds a further 5” to the length of the full/double.
The smallest of all the beds in our small category, the twin/single bed measures 39” x 75”. Traditionally, twin bed frames are intended to be bought in pairs and placed together, in a sense creating one bed frame composed of two separate frames.
Despite their name, twin bed frames are really intended to be used by one user at a time.
Offering a slight length increase over the standard Twin bed frame and mattress, twin XL bed frames grant an additional 5” of length to give users slightly more room to stretch, toss, and turn throughout the night.
Full/double bed frames are the first to be designed with two sleepers in mind. They feature the same lengthways measurement as a twin, albeit with an additional 15” of width.
This extra 15” provides ample room for two occupants, or acts as a welcomed upgrade to solo sleepers that love to sprawl out.
As implied by the “XL” moniker, full XL bed frames provide an additional 5” of length to an already pretty spacious full bed frame, giving a boost in both width and length over a traditional twin frame.
If you have more space to fill, or you’re simply looking to upgrade your existing bed frame, a jump up in size is always welcome. It gives you a lot more space to stretch and prepare yourself for the day – a major comfort uplift.
Starting the category is the queen bed frame, which measures as 60” x 80”. After the queen comes the California king bed, measuring 72” x 84”, a major 12” wider and 4” longer than the queen.
Completing the medium-large size category is the king bed, which adds a further 4” of width to the California king, making it 76” x 80” overall.
The queen bed and mattress makes for the first of three bed and mattress sizes in our medium-large category, clocking in at 60” x 80” in size. This makes the queen bed a whole 6” wider than its predecessor, the full XL.
In the middle of the medium-large category is the California king bed and mattress, weighing in at 72” x 84”.
Completing the medium-large category is the king size bed and mattress. The king bed offers an enormous 76” x 80” in dimensions, technically making it wider but roughly 4” shorter than the California king bed. If you want something that’s larger in every direction, you’ll want to pay attention to our next category.
Here we are, the very biggest bed and mattress sizes you could ask for. There’re only two here, but they’re certainly very large.
The first of them is the emperor bed, which comes in at a whopping 84” x 84” in a perfect square. After that comes the super emperor frame, which adds a further 6” of width to the already huge emperor.
Made for those who truly value space and comfort, the emperor bed measures 84” x 84”. It’s a perfect square, making the emperor bed a perfect centerpiece to any room.
To go one step further, the super emperor bed frame measures 90” x 84”, making it one of, if not the largest bed frame money can buy.
