Get Laid Beds Staff Walk To Gambia

By Jonathan 10 October 2024

In September, our team set out on a challenge: to walk, run, or jog the equivalent distance from our offices in Leicester to Gambia - a total of 3,452 miles in just 30 days (or over 7 million steps).

A Goal For Charity

The goal of the walk was to raise money to support Shout, a charity that provides free, 24/7 mental health support to children, young people, and adults.

Just £10 can support a conversation with someone in crisis, possibly saving a life.

£25 can help fund expert supervision from a clinician overseeing the conversations on Shout’s platform.

A contribution of £250 can provide training for a new Shout volunteer to engage in life-saving conversations.

Progress Through The Month

We tracked our progress using the Step Up app. The group leaderboard which collated our 47 volunteers allowed us all to see us stride towards our goal, while also providing a fun, friendly competition between staff along the way. On the first day, we walked 232,737 steps, with a group walk taking place in local green space.

As the month went on, each team member found their own way to contribute steps, whether by using the treadmill, walking the dog, going for a run, or opting to walk to the office instead of driving.

The Final Total

With 4 days left to go, we hit our end goal, collaboratively walking the 3,452 miles between us. By the end of the month, we finished on an impressive 3,798 miles (or 8,355,683 steps). Exceeding the goal by over 300 miles! A great team effort by all.
